The man who smuggled himself into Auschwitz

Denis Avey is a remarkable man by any measure. A courageous and determined soldier in World War II, he was captured by the Germans and imprisoned in a camp connected to the Germans' largest concentration camp, Auschwitz.
But his actions while in the camp - which he has never spoken about until now - are truly extraordinary. When millions would have done anything to get out, Mr Avey repeatedly smuggled himself into the camp. Now 91 and living in Derbyshire, he says he wanted to witness what was going on inside and find out the truth about the gas chambers, so he could tell others. He knows he took "a hell of a chance". "When you think about it in today's environment it is ludicrous, absolutely ludicrous," he says. "You wouldn't think anyone would think or do that, but that is how I was. I had red hair and a temperament to match. Nothing would stop me." He arranged to swap for one night at a time with a Jewish inmate he had come to trust. He exchanged his uniform for the filthy, stripy garments the man had to wear. For the Auschwitz inmate it meant valuable food and rest in the British camp, while for Denis it was a chance to gather facts on the inside.

In Memoriam: Rabbi Meir Kahane

By Shifra Hoffman Arutz Sheva Cheshvan 18, 5770 / November 5, 2009
(Israelnationalnews.com) In this generation of fleeting allegiance and loyalty, particularly in the realm of Jewish leadership, it seems inexplicable that today, years after the brutal murder of Rabbi Meir Kahane, he is mourned by so many Jews throughout the world. The phrase coined so as to perpetuate his ideas as well as his memory is" Kahane tzadak"(Kahane was right [i.e.his predictions were correct]).
Having worked closely for more than two decades with this self-sacrificing Jewish leader, both in the United States and in Israel, I feel impelled, on the l9th anniversary of his murder, to relate a few little known insights about the man behind the headlines.
Although demonized by both left- and right-wing Israeli governments for his prophetic warnings concerning the rise of Arab nationalism and the dire consequences of making concessions to these implacable enemies, Rabbi Kahane remained undaunted. In his view, the Torah was the only timely and relevant 'road map' for the Jewish people.

Remember the Temple? Farmer builds model of Biblical temple
|
Posted by jewishindy on Thursday, April 30 @ 11:21:18 EDT (92 reads)
A retired farmer has spent more than 30 years building an enormous scale model of a Biblical temple.
Alec Garrard, 78, has dedicated a massive 33,000 hours to constructing the ancient Herod's Temple, which measures a whopping 20ft by 12ft. The pensioner has hand-baked and painted every clay brick and tile and even sculpted 4,000 tiny human figures to populate the courtyards. Historical experts believe the model is the best representation in the world of what the Jewish temple actually looked like and it has attracted thousands of visitors from all over the globe.
But Mr Garrard, who started the elaborate project in his 40's, says his masterpiece will not be finished in his lifetime.

(IsraelNN.com) Israeli Memorial Day begins on Monday night and continues on Tuesday. The country’s Independence Day begins right afterwards on Tuesday night, and continues on Wednesday.
Memorial Day commemorates the 22,570 civilians and soldiers who lost their lives in the fight for the Israel's independence since the year 1860. Joining the list in the past year were 13 Israelis who died in Operation Cast Lead and 13-year old Shlomo Nativ, who was murdered by an Arab terrorist in Bay Ayin just two weeks ago.
A siren will sound at 8:00 p.m. Monday night throughout the country, as Israelis stand for two minutes of silence. Immediately afterwards, the state ceremony begins at the Western Wall. President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, and Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi will be in attendance.
On Tuesday, Memorial Day continues and bereaved families traditionally visit the graves of their loved ones. A second siren sounds at 11:00 a.m. Another state ceremony will take place at Ammunition Hill in Jerusalem with the Prime Minister, Supreme Court President Dorit Beinish, and the Chief Rabbis Yona Metzger and Shlomo Amar.
The organization for IDF widows and orphans said on Monday that over 8,000 widows and orphans of slain IDF soldiers currently live in Israel. The oldest widow is 96, while the youngest is 18. In addition, 27 women became widows over the past year because their husbands were killed in IDF operations.

Again and again, I hear people who are questioned about the holocaust say that there is no explanation for this terrible tragedy, which befell the Jewish people at the end of nearly 2000 years dispersion. How could God have allowed it? What was the reason and how can one still believe in a God Who apparently allowed such a disaster of such magnitude including the massacre of 1 ½ million children to take place in "christianised Europe."
First of all, let me hereby state that the Holocaust was prophesied about in the scriptures. That a terrible, terrible disaster would happen to the Jewish people just before they would return to their own land. In Ezekiel we read the following verses:

(IsraelNN.com) The Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Project presents the world's only set of photographs documenting the Auschwitz death camp. The photos follow Jewish prisoners as they step off the trains, enter the camp, and are sorted, with some going on to forced labor while most walk to their deaths in the gas chambers.
Can't see video? Click here. The one-of-a-kind album was discovered by Holocaust survivor Lilly Jacobs, whose parents and siblings were murdered in Auschwitz. Jacobs, then a teenager, found the photos in the camp's deserted Nazi barracks when the war ended. She gave the album to Yad Vashem in 1980.

(IsraelNN.com) Israel's official Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony opened on Monday night at the Yad Vashem memorial museum in Jerusalem. Senior politicians, judges and rabbis took the stage. The event focused on the stories of several survivors who had lived through the Holocaust as children. One recalled her final moments with her mother and her years in hiding with a Christian family, while another spoke of her family's trek across Romania with thousands of others, few of whom survived. President of Israel Shimon Peres greets twin sisters Yehudit Barnea and Lia Huber who were tortured as young girls in the medical experiments performed on humans by Nazi Dr. Josef Mengele. The twins related their story at the official state Holocaust ceremony Monday evening and were honored with the kindling of one of six torches for the 6 million Jews massacred by Germany. (IsraelNN.com) Thursday marks the eighth anniversary of the killing of Binyamin Kahane and his wife, Talia, who were murdered in a terrorist attack on the way to their Tapuach home. Binyamin Kahane was the son of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, who was assassinated by an Arab terrorist’s gunshot in a Manhattan hotel in 1990. [Read above: hired Arab assassins called ("Terrorists") for the Israeli government, in both cases.]
Rabbi Shmuel Cohen, Tapuach’s communal rabbi along with Gershon Masika, the mayor of Samaria participated in memorial services at Tapuach’s Central Synagogue.
Michael Ben-Ari, who is in the number four spot of the National Union party list, attended the services. Ben-Ari was a close friend and study partner of Rabbi Binyamin Kahane at the Merkaz HaRav Yeshiva. He subsequently founded together with his study partner the Yeshiva of the Jewish Idea, in memory of Binyamin’s father, Rabbi Meir Kahane.
Gershon Masika stated at the memorial service that both father and son were men of truth, self-sacrifice, and had true love of the Jewish People.
Referring to the Intifada and the current security situation in Gaza, Masika stated, “Leaders who hide from the truth end up with situations like we have today.”

Keep your lights on: Remembering Kristallnacht

Worldwide memorial events to take place on 70th anniversary of Nazi pogrom, including night-long light vigils in synagogues across world, international conference in Jerusalem
Kobi Nahshoni Jews across the world will be lighting up the night this Sunday, as a vigil for victims of Kristallnacht, the Nazis' widespread anti-Jewish pogrom 70 years ago in which over a thousand synagogues were destroyed and hundreds of Jews were killed or arrested. Israeli officials are encouraging synagogues and midrashot (centers for Jewish learning) across the world to remain illuminated overnight, on the night between November 9 and November 10, in memory of the fallen. "The Nazis' objective was to darken Israel's eyes and turn off 'the light of the world', the light of the Torah and prayer that shone out of synagogues and midrashot," read a joint message published by Social Affairs Minister Isaac Herzog and chief rabbis Yona Metzger and Shlomo Amar.
"As such we call on all of the people of Israel, in the State of Israel and in the Diaspora, to light candles and leave lights on in synagogues and midrashot on the 12th night of (the Jewish month of) Marheshvan, in order to remember and to remind future generations never to forget the cruelty and evil actions that befell us," the statement continued.
The idea to illuminate synagogues on the memorial date was the brainchild of Rabbi Yechiel Wasserman, chairman of the Diaspora Spiritual Services Center.

Please read the little cartoon carefully, it's powerful. Then read the comments at the end, and please -- forward it! We cannot, we must not, ever forget what happened in Europe over 60 years ago, because it could happen again. Anyone, any group, could be the target. It has been said that those who refuse to study history are doomed to repeat it. In this case, those who are attempting to rewrite history are probably planning to repeat it! The hatred is already there, in place, taught to the children from infancy, with promises of glory and honor to those who carry out the plans.
Forewarned is forearmed, and I'm doing my small part by forwarding this message. I hope you'll do the same.

If Jerusalem is the spiritual center of the whole world, why is it that the State of Israel, which considers Jerusalem as its holy Capital, is nevertheless continuously maligned in the United Nations, and almost unanimously voted against on practically every issue dealing with the Holy Land?
Why is it that the bestial and inhumane actions of the Arabs are not openly condemned as evil by the nations of the world, who profess to live in accordance with the moral principles taught by the Hebrew Prophets. Those questions are not easily answered. Nor is the conduct of the media and so called "world opinion" readily explainable. You are not going to get understandable answers from Women in Green on these questions. They are as bewildered as you are by these conundrums, and perplexities.
What you are going to hear about however, is the attempt by Women in Green to reach you and have you touched by the spirituality of their upcoming Walk around the Walls of the Old City of Holy Jerusalem. We want you to be moved spiritually by the fact that both of the Temples which housed the presence of the L-rd of the Universe, were destroyed on the same exact day, the 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av. What meaning does that fact have? Do we mortals fail sometimes in our attempts to morally fulfill G-d's Commandments? Do we sometimes lose perspective, and make of our rituals the ultimate goal, rather than a means to draw closer to G-d? Do our Temples, synagogues and churches, lose sight of their purpose, which is to draw nearer to our One G-d.

LEADERS FAIL BUT GOD DOES NOT
|
Posted by JewishIndy on Monday, July 28 @ 11:28:09 EDT (296 reads)
They said to me, "Make us a god to be our leader..." Exodus 32:23
When Moses went to meet God on the mountain, the people thought Moses had abandoned them. They forgot that the Divine Presence was still with them even if their human leader was not there. The people grew angry and upset, demanding a replacement in the form of a golden calf, an inhuman god, incapable of failure because it was incapable of anything except being an icon of security and lack of change. The golden calf could not confort, console, teach, guide or do anything that a compassionate God or a loving human leader could do.
In my younger years I expected too much of church and community leadership because I wanted them to be flawless in their duties. I was critical when they failed to meet my standards and expectations. As I've grown older I view leaders in a different light. I still expect integrety, compassion, openness, and humble service from them, but I am now more able to forgive them when they fail to meet this gospel virtues because I know how I also fail to live these virtues.
Most importantly, I now believe and remember that even when my leaders fail me, God is still with me.
